Home Cleanup After Parties

Along with great home parties, comes a great big home mess when the party goers take their leave. This holiday season, take some of the stress out of cleaning with these few tips:

*Like any good general, you need a plan. Looking at a large mess in your home can be discouraging and may even keep you from acting on it immediately. Developing a plan of action (where to start, how to move, what goes where) will help you to take some of the anxiety out of your clean up process.

*Have your supplies organized and on hand. If you have ever rented a maid service, you will have noticed they carry handy little caddies for all of their cleaning goods. It is a great idea to have your own cleaning supplies neatly organized in this manner. This may even make cleaning a little bit like fun.

*Prevent mess overload, by cleaning as you go. The wonderful magic of television shows us entire meals cooked with no mess at all. This is not tv, and you are going to have to clean as you go if you do not want to turn your kitchen area into a war zone.

*Skip the nap. Sure, you want to crash after any good party, but the mess isn't going anywhere. Stave off a future headache by not procrastinating.

*HELP! Drag your husband away from the football game, unplug the X-Box, and make cleaning a family affair. This is not 1950, and everyone should chip in in the home.

*Use all resources. Pack the dishwasher at first, but do not be afraid to get your hands wet in the sink. Waiting on the dishwasher will only make your cleanup time last forever. Use a little elbow grease and you will get to your nap before you know it.

Adding Shower Screens To Your Bath Tub

Many people find that the simply cannot find shower curtains that they truly enjoy looking at every day. They are hard to keep clean sometimes and that can sometimes fall apart at the worst moment possible. And then there are the shower doors with the metal track that goes all the way across the length of the job. These can be a major pain as they can fall off the tracks with ease making them a safety issue for children and they are extremely hard to keep very clean. These reasons are probably why some people are finding a better solution to keeping the water in the tub while taking a shower.

The shower screens are something that solves a lot of these problems for people and it serves its purpose. Of course not a lot of people are truly aware that shower screens even exist and if you were to mention it to someone, they would not even know what one looks like. The most basic of the shower screens is a piece of glass that if fitted on the edge of the tub but only goes about one – third of the way across the tub. The shower screens are stationary which means you will not have the tracks to worry about getting into to clean.

The clear glass of the shower screens are easy to clean and since it only goes part way across the length of the bath tub there is not a whole lot that you have to mess with. The parts of the tub where water is likely to splash out from a shower are covered leaving the rest wide open. Shower screens are certainly an attractive alternative for people who are simply sick and tired of everything else that they have tried throughout the years.

The Health Benefits of Maintaining a Home Garden

When one hears the words 'gardens' and 'health' one naturally assumes that vegetable gardens are being discussed. But maintaining any sort of garden brings its own health benefits, as it isn't just the fresh and preservative free produce that vegetable gardens provide that can benefit a family's overall health, but also the exercise and creative challenge of working in any kind of home garden that adds yet further to one's physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

All that hoeing, raking, pulling, watering, bending, and carting things to-and-fro is a good source of steady, low-impact exercise that is especially ideal for older gardeners. And not only is such exercise more fun than trudging mindlessly on a treadmill for hours, it is also practical -- by asking one's body to move in natural and necessary ways that strengthen muscles and joints, gardeners maintain a higher level of fitness for their other everyday tasks. As a natural, body weight bearing exercise, the healthy activities associated with gardening can also help prevent osteoporosis and maintain a strong frame.

The health benefits of garden work go beyond the physical as well -- there is the mental stimulation of planning, selecting, laying out, and maintaining a home plot. Whether it is flowers, edibles, or plants of a different sort, planning a year's garden can be an absorbing challenge. Designing not only a practical, but aesthetically pleasing, arrangement in one's home garden is a source of creative satisfaction. Overall, no matter the kind of garden one chooses, the benefits to body, mind, and soul that home gardening can provide make it not just an excellent hobby, but a hobby for life.

A Living Room That You Can Relax And Live In

Your living room is normally the room that you plop down in at the end of a long day. Much of your home "living" is done in this room, so it should be comfortable, relaxing, and reflective of your life and style.

In thinking about improvements, the first thing to do is think about what type of feel that you want. Since we are talking about the living room, think about what type of life you lead-- do you have kids, pets, do you feel more relaxed in a West Indies tropical hideaway or a streamlined metropolitan pad? Whatever makes you feel "at home" should guide your design and decor for the room.

Start with paint that portrays the feel that you want for the room. Most paints are appropriate for a living room, so there are very few restrictions on the color palette, but once again, refer back to the style that you are looking for and the feel that you want to achieve. Consider wallpaper or a border for added effect.

Whether you will use your existing furniture or purchase new, make your furniture fit into your theme. Use slipcovers to renew older furniture, choosing colors or patterns that suit the design of the room. Throw pillows and accessories can also incorporate your chosen colors and patterns of interest. Arrange the furniture in a way that will allow for ultimate relaxation.

Even if you have carpet, floor rugs can add focus and comfort to a seating arrangement, so consider adding one. Rugs also help to "pull the room together."

When we think relaxing, one thing that is normally not relaxing is coming home to clutter. So in designing your living room, make sure to incorporate hidden storage for clutter control.

It can be relatively easy and inexpensive to make your living room a relaxing abode if you follow these tips and your heart.

Adding Retaining Walls To Your Yard

When it comes to adding decoration to your yard all while making it functional, there is nothing better then adding in retaining walls. These walls can serve many functional purposes as well as being very decorative in nature. Whether you want to hold a hillside up or simply add a place for your flowers and plants to grow, retaining walls will do a lot for your yard and your property value.

Retaining walls that are for holding land back, when done right, can be very pleasing to the eye and it is no wonder that a lot of people enjoy them in their yard. The thing is, just because something is meant for a functional purpose does not mean that it has to look plain and bland. There are a lot of decorative things that can be done with retaining walls to make sure that they are pleasing to look at. With all of the different textures, colors, and materials available now for building retaining walls there is no reason they would not become a focus point of beauty in your yard.

The cost of retaining walls is certainly something to consider because even the cheapest of the materials is going to cost you a lot in the end. You first need to calculate your square footage in order to determine just what exactly it is going to cost you in the end. Once you figure out how much you are really going to need you will then be able to figure out just what exact style of type of material you are going to be able to afford. If you really want to go with a more expensive material then you may have to make cutbacks elsewhere.

If you do the work yourself then you will save yourself a considerable amount of money. While the cost of the materials is always going to be a little bit on the pricey side, the labor costs can usually get out of control. Taking the job on yourself is a great way to work around that problem. Constructing retaining walls is not all that hard once you have the basic concept down. Do a little research and you will be surprised at how much you can learn and do on your own.
